Leveraging Semantic Tagging with a New Breed of Software

Memoori-Webinar-blog

One major challenge in building automation is the sheer amount of data being generated from smart devices within buildings. There’s no denying data can hold value, but figuring out how to make use of it in a simplified way is becoming increasingly more difficult as the variety of sources and types of data proliferate. Common problems related to the management of data include:

  • Numerous communication protocols
  • Inconsistent and non-standard naming conventions
  • Inadequate data labeling, so context is not defined
  • Much of the recorded data is “locked away” on hard drives either on-site or in the cloud

What is needed is a proper semantic tagging process and a standard data model, so that the context of all the real-time data can be fully defined. The good news is that there is a solution; Project Haystack is a globally supported open-source initiative to create a standard tagging and data-modeling methodology and classification libraries for building systems.  The Haystack standard enables data to be found and understood by application software automatically, without time-consuming human interpretation and translations, thereby enabling its transformation into actionable insights that help manage a building’s performance. Data tags (or metadata) provide the context and meaning that enables the data to be abstracted from the device or system it originates from. Once tagged in a standard way, management and analytic software can consistently and automatically process the data irrespective of which sub-system it comes from. Even better news is that newer software that now supports the Haystack standard can leverage tagging to simplify and automate system configuration processes that were previously manual, with huge time-saving, which translates to reduced costs to deliver smart control systems and analytics applications.

Recently, Chris Irwin (V.P. of Sales EMEA and Asia) did a webinar with Memoori on this very topic and how semantic tagging can be leveraged in building automation systems through a new breed of software. Listen to the presentation below, or you can download the whitepaper here.
