Payoffs of Haystack Tagging: Automated Commissioning

Tagging and data modeling have numerous benefits in the Buildings industry. In a recent blog, we discussed the challenges in the industry that are being solved by Project Haystack. Now, we will look at some practical examples of how tagging and data modeling is being used by the Haystack community in a variety of applications and use cases in a series of seven blogs (the seven payoffs). This blog highlights the payoffs of automated commissioning.

One of the most important but time-consuming tasks for implementing an intelligent building is the initial checkout and on-going retro-commissioning. Tag based automated commissioning gives you the ability to create a set of tasks and apply them globally across an entire system of equipment. Each step is executed automatically and the results are summarized in a checkout/commissioning report. No more spending hours manually checking sensors, stroking dampers, and recording results.

We all know, the labor required to walk through the commissioning process steps: commanding an actuator,  validating sensor data as feedback, and noting the system performance. Now imagine that this process can be repeated programmatically by an application for a whole series of building equipment controllers. In the context of automated commissioning, this magically happens when tagging is leveraged to automatically bind to, control, and report on devices. 

Thanks to Project Haystack, there are standard definitions for equipment that include standardized points to describe the inputs and outputs of a typical system. This makes applications like automated commissioning able to execute recursively the multi-step process without the need for the previously manual, labor intensive commissioning checklist.
