Becoming More Sustainable, One Step at a Time

Earth Day (1)

Did you know that in 1970, Earth Day launched the modern environmental movement and is now recognized as the planet's largest civic event each year? Earth Day is a day to advocate and inspire action for environmental issues. They have been mobilizing over 1 billion people annually on Earth Day to protect the planet. Let's celebrate it together on April 22.

One of the cool initiatives Earth Day has tackled is advocating for energy efficiency upgrades in schools. They were a key supporter of Proposition 39, a voter initiative generating roughly $1 billion dollars over five years to be invested in energy efficiency upgrades in public K-12 schools and community colleges.

Earth Day is a good reminder to continue to think about sustainability, green buildings, and energy efficiency. One of the simplest and most impactful ways buildings can be more efficient is to get their occupancy schedules and comfort settings optimized based on use and need. For example, during Earth Hour, the goal was to show support while showcasing how building automation systems (BAS) can schedule lighting. Check out this video to see how easy it is to add a scheduled event to your smart building.

In addition to lighting, smart building controls can automate HVAC systems to better utilize energy through more efficient algorithms to reduce energy consumption and, ultimately, greenhouse gases.

Utilizing FIN Framework software technology, we offer a fully customizable solution to integrate, visualize, manage, and control a range of energy management services and products. For example, one of our partners (Blackstone Energy Services) has created a new energy management software (EMS) product called blackPAC™, powered by our FIN Framework.

blackPAC™ is a state-of-the-art energy management platform that consolidates a facility’s energy data into one scalable and user-friendly interface on the web. It empowers both private and public sector facilities to control, report, and ultimately minimize their energy costs, consumption, and carbon emissions.

The team behind blackPAC™ kicked off an 'Earth Month ecoBoss Battle' last week, a two-week challenge where users record daily actions on their ecoBoss app to contribute to a greener planet. For example, university students can upload their daily activities, showing how to be more sustainable. This year, the focus is on the dangers plastics pose to our health, biodiversity, and environment, and they are making sure to ditch single-use plastics and promote sustainable fashion. While the Blackstone team says their efforts are just a small part of the larger mission to cut global plastic production by 60% by 2040, they believe in the power of setting an example for those around us. Becoming more sustainable, one step at a time.

It's particularly rewarding to see software technology enable new products focused on helping mitigate climate change. We're proud that FIN Framework has been successful in helping evolve the industry and change the world to become more sustainable.
