Why Technical Training is so Important

When it comes to implementing and using the FIN Framework, there are several resources and training options that users can leverage on their journey to proficiency. Depending on your role (end user or system integrator) and your situation, there may be multiple paths to get up to speed with FIN. As with any technical solution, there is a minimum basic understanding of the features and functionality that need to be mastered before deeper detailed skills can be learned. In this blog, we'll discuss different learning experiences and the role they play in becoming a FIN Rockstar. 

On the job learning

One of the simplest approaches is to gain knowledge through on-the-job training from peers. This is particularly common in larger organizations where a senior engineer or facility manager attends formal training (virtual or in-person classes) and then shares the knowledge with additional staff or team members. This is the most cost-effective approach since each additional "trainee" is likely to be learning by doing, and no dedicated training time is required. 

For learning styles that prefer a hands-on approach, on-the-job learning can be a productive and efficient way to learn. The downside is the scope and level of detail can be limited by the level of expertise of the in-house trainer. Although FIN is relatively simple to use, it's best to dive deeper to get the most benefit. You'll see additional learning options to enhance your skills in the next section, such as using video tutorials or attending a virtual class.

Video tutorials

A popular way to learn a specific task or skill is by simply searching the internet for "How To" videos. This could include tutorials for specific FIN applications, such as those covered in our End User App Series, where facility managers and other users of FIN can quickly come up to speed at their own pace. For system integrators, we also have a series of "FINtastic Tips" videos that cover the workflows and techniques for creating a project solution. 

For those with a learning style that prefer an auditory or visual approach, videos provide a great way to learn at your own pace and usually at no additional cost. The downside is that a collection of task based videos don't fully cover what's needed to be proficient. One of the benefits of classroom training is that it covers conceptual topics and organizes the curriculum into an optimal learning flow.

Virtual class

One of the positive things to come from the pandemic was awareness and a transition to the power of virtual classes. The class format can vary, from an instructor-led version of a synchronous classroom training course to an asynchronous training course where the student learns at their own pace. We offer both options for a number of course levels at the FINstitute, such as Take FIN for A Spin, FIN Technicians, and FIN Advanced Technicians. 

Virtual classes are a good compromise when it comes to cost since the remote class eliminates travel expenses and travel time. Also, many OEMs and companies that offer worker/employee training now incorporate product training into their skills training, such as Siemen's "MyLearning."

In-person class

Finally, we cannot forget the traditional (and our favorite) way to come up to speed with FIN, which is attending an in-person class. This provides the richest technical information and the most engaging learning environment due to live instruction. Of course, there is a cost associated with training and travel.

In addition, in-person training offers a unique opportunity to build relationships through interpersonal interactions during and after the course. We love to take the show on the road and can offer our courses onsite. Check out some of the great feedback we received from a recent training.

Each customer may take their own path on their journey to becoming a FIN Rockstar. While there are various learning opportunities, some are better than others. On-the-job learning and "how-to" videos are great for topic-based learning, however there is still a need for conceptual and workflow knowledge as well.
